A more traditional chair slipcover is hand sewn by a slipcover professional or upholstery shop. Hand crafted slipcovers were originally made by tapestry weavers and were used to protect the furnishings of the very rich. But during the 18th and 19th century chair slipcovers became a fashion accessory all on their own. As slipcovers for chairs became the vogue, slipcover makers, often immigrants from Europe would go to the homes of their wealthy clients and measure and cut out fabrics on site. Then the men would return to their homes or shops and have their womenfolk do the actual sewing.
Have you taken a look at slipcovers recently? There are lots of new fabrics, textures, and styles to choose from. There is a slipcover for whatever need you may have. The benefits of slipcovers as compared to buying new furniture are tremendous. Let's take a look at just a few. If you take a piece of fabric and tailor it to fit over your sofa, chair, or loveseat, you have a slipcover. These new furniture slipcovers are available in your favorite style. There is the loose casual style that drapes over your furniture or there is the new stretch memory fabrics that cling to existing furniture like a glove. There are also the more formal tailored look with fitted arms and piping detail.
Of course, choosing the fabric for your chair is also part of the fun. Fabric that you love but might not want to wear now becomes fair game for your furniture. Although dressmaking fabrics can work fine for a slipcover, upholstery fabric is made for the job and will stand up to lots of use and abuse. For your first project, choose a fabric that’s not too heavy, dense, or loosely woven, so that it will be easy to work with. If you want a washable slipcover, be sure to preshrink the fabric by running it through the washing machine.
Buy the Appropriate Size Slipcover. If you find a slipcover that you really like but it is not quite big enough for the size of your couch, do not try to use it anyways. If you use too small of slipcover on a couch or chair, it will end up looking too tight and you will most likely be able to see parts of the couch peeking out from under the slipcover. Also, don't use a slipcover that is too large for a furniture piece. This will make the furniture look very sloppy and unpolished. Be sure to measure your furniture before you look for a slipcover to ensure the proper fit.
