Decide on the Look of the Slipcover According to the Style of the Room. Some people like slipcovers to form fit against a couch so that you can see every outline of the couch. Other people may prefer the looser fitting slipcover that simply drapes over the furniture and hangs loosely off the couch. One thing to keep in mind is that with the tight fitting slipcover, you may find that you are constantly re-arranging it due to people sitting on it and moving about on it. You may also find that this type of slipcover may rip more easily from being pulled too tight or in a wrong direction.
Prepare a muslin pattern - Once you’ve completely pinned and fitted the muslin on the chair, stand back and take a look. How do the proportions look? How about the location of the band’s overlapping closures? If your eye is satisfied, unpin the muslin from the chair, separate the components, and lay them flat. Use a French curve and a straightedge to fine-tune the seamlines, darts, and other markings. Add seam allowances to the seat, band, and skirt. Add the fabric needed for the inverted pleats (they should be at least 2 in. deep), along with hem allowances to the skirt pattern.
